IS YOUR CONNECTION READY FOR THE TRANSITION?
Get ready to replace your copper network with a fiber optic network
WHY CHANGE TECHNOLOGY?
The copper network is progressively replaced by the fiber network.
Today, the copper network is reaching the limit of its technical capacities. The aging and sometimes obsolete copper network no longer meets the needs and demands of a society that consumes and produces data in an exponential way, especially with online tools related to teleworking or training, streaming applications or online administrative services.
A very high-speed network – fast, modern and reliable – becomes essential.
Very high-speed networks bring better speeds, better efficiency in terms of use, and limit the environmental footprint.
With the deployment of fiber optic infrastructure, maintaining the copper network is no longer relevant. The definitive copper switch-off is therefore expected around 2030.
WHAT TO DO?
If your connection is based on the copper network, then it’s time to move up a gear by choosing a very high-speed fiber, cable, 5G or satellite network.
KNOW YOUR DISCONNECTION DATE
If you have not yet been contacted by your operator and in order to prepare for this step, you can check your disconnection date in the form below.
CHECK THE CLOSING DATE OF THE COPPER NETWORK AT YOUR ADDRESS
If necessary, contact your operator or another operator of your choice to study the possible alternatives.
If you have already opted for an electronic communication service (fixed telephony and Internet) based on the very high-speed network (fiber, cable, 5G or satellite network), you will not be impacted by the closure of the copper network at your address.
If in doubt, contact your operator. You can also read our FAQs.
POSSIBLE TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS
Optical fiber – cable – satellite – 5G
The incumbent operator plans to gradually replace its copper network with a fiber network, but other very high speed technologies exist, such as cable, satellite or 5G.
- Cable is currently available to 90% of households and allows speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s in download
- Satellite is an alternative for isolated sites or when a wired connection is technically difficult
- 5G, a mobile technology that can be used for fixed applications, which will provide 100% national coverage by 2025.
ADVANTAGES OF VERY HIGH-SPEED NETWORKS COMPARED TO THE COPPER NETWORK
- Faster and more efficient data transfer, allowing speeds of up to 1 Gigabit/s and more
- Less energy consuming, more environmentally friendly and more sustainable
- Low latency, which is important especially for video applications
- Possibility to connect several devices simultaneously to the Internet while keeping the same quality of service with a fluid connection without interruption
- Allows new uses (e-health, metavers, …)
KNOW THE COVERAGE OF VERY HIGH SPEED NETWORKS
In a few clicks, you can find out the coverage of fixed and mobile Internet networks in Luxembourg, by zone (municipality, address, 1kmx1km grid for fixed, 100mx 100m for mobile), by technology or by operator.
Thanks to the geographical survey of the ILR, you have information on the coverage of the operators’ networks by type of infrastructure in Luxembourg.
